Creative discipline
When our children make poor choices, we have to redirect our parenting. We are always learning as parents to provide structured boundaries and support as our children grow.
We want our children to make mistakes in our care so that we can provide the thoughtful redirection to learn not to repeat those choices. As frustrating as it is growing up is about making mistakes and as parents we have to be there to direct and instruct our children. Recently, a parent told me of his son losing all screen time privileges. The itouch, computer and playstation were off limits because of abuse. In addition, he refused to speak about the punishment and would not talk about his poor choices. The parent just waited. The child had no access until he was ready to talk to her about the incident. Two weeks later he approached her. After their discussion, she explained she wanted him to read a self-help book about making good choices. He refused. The parent continued to wait patiently. Eventually, he relented and began reading. There are many ways to parent. Parents are often overwhelmed, tired, frustrated and feel alone in their battle to raise a successful child. If you have a story to share and encourage others, please do so here. We’d love to learn from you.
